Black and White Beer Tasting Party

I love when I open up my email and receive a fun party like this one!  Flavia from Fete a Fete shared this great black and white beer tasting party.  Although you see a lot of wine tasting parties, don’t leave the beer drinkers out and host a creative party like this one.

Flavia describes the party-

“The idea of hosting a beer tasting party came from our love of entertaining and the fact that, with two little boys in our lives, it’s getting much harder to go out on the town…  We kept it small and invited a few friends to bring different bottles of beer to share, and we split them into two categories: light-colored and dark-colored beers.

Newsprint food-safe fry basket liners inspired the all black & white décor. I used empty beer bottles as vases holding wheat sprigs, a reference to the ingredient sometimes used in the beer making process. I used a chalkboard concept throughout the decoration, using black adhesive paper to label the tasting glasses, beverage tubs and paper coasters; mini chalkboards to mark the foods’ names; and I hung a blackboard on the wall as a scoreboard.  I even managed to find a chalkboard oilcloth and used it as a table cover!  To mark the scores, I gathered a few plain magnets, and as we opened each beer, we would stick the bottle cap on a magnet and give it a 0-10 score.  Because the caps are made of metal, no glue was necessary to guarantee they would stay in place.  In addition to our “scoreboard”, I also made paper tasting place mats with black & white dots and stripes borders for guests to write down their preferences and perceptions of each beer.

As a “party favor”, I gave bottle opener “rings” for guests to use during the tasting and to take home with them. I displayed the beer bottle caps I had in glass containers, and that also served as a place for guests to drop in their caps as well.

For the food, I wanted something simple, yummy and easy to eat.  Basically some typical “bar food”.  I served traditional bar counter snacks such as mixed nuts, salty snack mix and popcorn. We also had different flavors of potato and multigrain chips, sandwiches, individual servings of Mexican 7-layer dip, gorgonzola-walnut-pear phyllo shells, cocktail meatballs (Buffalo-chicken style and spinach, Fontina & roasted garlic). I made whole wheat soft pretzels and displayed them in my two espresso cup holders. For dipping them I had several types of mustards, pepper jelly, horseradish sauce and also made a beer-cheese dip.

We had a blast and are already thinking of a new tasting party…   Cheers!”
