My Exfoliating Cleanser – What Is It & What Is It For?

Skincare can be pretty confusing sometimes when you’re starting out, with so many products to choose from and literally hundreds of different brands out there too. One such product is the exfoliating cleanser, which does go some way to removing the guesswork out of keeping your skin healthy.

But what is it? Is it more of an exfoliator or more of a cleanser? That’s precisely what we’ll be looking at in this blog, so sit back and let’s get started.

It Does What It Says On the Packaging

Obviously, when a product is called an exfoliating cleanser, it’s going to do what it says on the packaging i.e. cleanse your face, while also providing an exfoliating action to eliminate all of the oil, dead skin and grime that builds up on the skin. However, it’s not quite as simple as that, as we’ll see now.

First off, there are two types of this kind of product – physical and chemical. The physical type is typically referred to as a 2-in-1 product that utilizes tiny particles to remove dead skin and dirt, whereas chemical types achieve the same end by using salicylic and glycolic acid.

Saving Time & Money

Which is best? Well, that depends very much on you, but some prefer chemical varieties because of the fact that the aforementioned chemicals are kinder to the skin than particles. What’s more, they tend to offer more even exfoliation than scrubs.

People tend to choose these products over separate cleansers and exfoliators because they’re cheaper than buying two products, quicker to use and they ensure that the very necessary job of exfoliating doesn’t get missed.

So, How Often Should You Use An Exfoliating Cleanser?

For the majority of people, depending on skin type, this type of cleanser should be used every day. That’s because it’s typically much less concentrated than an outright exfoliator and while you might not like the sound of putting acid on your skin every day, we’re talking about very, very mild concentrations.

…and If You Have Sensitive Skin?

If you’re someone who suffers with either sensitive or dry skin, then sure, you need to listen to what it’s telling you and for many in this position, it’s a matter of backing it off from a daily occurrence to perhaps 2 or 3 three times each week. This is usually sufficient to give your skin a smooth, bright appearance without being too harsh and aggravating it.

…and if you’ve got oily skin?

Conversely, if you’re someone with oily skin, then your exfoliant cleanser is absolutely your best friend, particularly when talking about those that contain salicylic acid. In an easy, gentle action this exfoliating cleanser will ensure your pores stay unclogged and drastically reduce the chances of irritation, redness and breakouts.

The Key Is Always Moderation

Essentially these cleanser/exfoliators offer a quick and convenient way to keep your skin looking youthful and smooth. Moderation is always key, as even the gentlest action can irritate the most sensitive skin types, so while some might be ok using these daily, others have to use them sparingly until they see how their skin reacts to them.

That said, if they are suitable for you, then you’ve got a product that a) saves you time b) saves you money in not having to buy separate products and c) stops you forgetting to exfoliate.

It’s certainly worth looking at for anyone interested in these benefits.
